It has been reported that Disney is looking to reboot the Tron franchise and is currently developing a new story with Jared Leto as the lead character.
Nothing is official yet, but it is not the first time that Leto has been considered for a role in a Tron film as back in 2015 he was considered to be added to the cast of Tron 3. While the upcoming reboot is still without a writer or director, Tron: Legacy co-producer Justin Springer has signed on to produce the film. Should Leto sign on it is expected that he and Emma Ludbrook, who has worked on many of Leto’s films will also help produce in some way.
This new Tron will be built from the already existing script that was intended to be Tron 3, dubbed Ascension, which was delayed and eventually cancelled soon after Disney’s takeover of Marvel and Lucasfilm. Tron: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski comment on plot of Tron: Ascension awhile back saying:
“What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a “Stranger in a Strange Land,” trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.”
This likely means that Tron characters entering the real world will be the main focus of the movie’s plot but we can expect an entirely new cast of characters.
