THR reports that director Rupert Wyatt has left Gambit, the X-Men spinoff starring Channing Tatum as the titular, card-flicking mutant. Wyatt blames scheduling conflicts as the reason for his departure.
“I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.”
There are speculations that imply his departure is more likely a result of not seeing eye-to-eye with Fox executives over script changes and budget. The push in the start date is rumored to be the result of having to extend the shoot of the film due to changes in the script that consequently prompt an increase in budget.
Wyatt also directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes for Fox.
